Insurcomm Restoration Accelerates Midwest Expansion with New Office in Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, Ohio | 12/8/25

Insurcomm Restoration, a Fortify Company and national leader in restoration and reconstruction, today announced the opening of its new Columbus, Ohio office, its second in the state and a significant milestone in the company’s rapid Midwest expansion.

The launch of Columbus comes just weeks after Insurcomm opened its Cincinnati office and follows Fortify Companies’ acquisition of Rytech Restoration, a move that expanded the company’s collective reach to more than 100 markets nationwide. Together, these steps strengthen Insurcomm’s ability to deliver dependable, around-the-clock restoration support across the state of Ohio.

The Columbus team will provide emergency restoration, environmental remediation, reconstruction, and biohazard services for families, property owners, and commercial facilities throughout central Ohio. With fast mobilization, clear communication, and full-service recovery management, Insurcomm brings local communities the skilled expertise needed to protect what matters most and turn unexpected disruption into a path forward.

“Expanding into Columbus means more people will have access to teams who understand and truly care about the human side of this work,” said Kelly Brewer, CEO of Fortify Companies. “We are not just showing up to complete a job. We are showing up to guide people through something they did not ask for and could not prepare for. What defines us is how we support customers in those moments when life has been interrupted. Columbus deserves that level of attention.”
— Kelly Brewer, CEO, Fortify Companies

Regional Vice President Rick Ohl, who oversees Insurcomm’s Midwest operations, will lead both the Cincinnati and Columbus locations. With more than 30 years of experience in restoration, construction, and large-loss recovery, Ohl is focused on building a high-performing team equipped for emergency response, commercial management, and complex loss coordination.

“In Ohio, dependability matters,” said Ohl. “Our teams show up, communicate clearly, and do the work right because people deserve everything going right when they’ve already been through enough. Columbus gives us the reach to support even more families and businesses with that level of care.”
— Rick Ohl, Regional Vice President

With an expanded presence in Ohio, Insurcomm is equipped to respond more quickly, deploy larger teams, and manage complex losses with the reliable consistency expected across all Fortify brands. The addition of Columbus strengthens the company’s ability to support families, businesses, and communities with dependable restoration services at the moments they need them most.

Understanding Puffbacks

What Homeowners Need to Know This Heating Season

As temperatures drop and heating systems start running again, many homeowners face an often-overlooked risk: puffbacks.

A puffback occurs when a furnace or boiler misfires, sending a blast of oily soot and smoke throughout your home. In a matter of seconds, walls, ceilings, and belongings can be coated in residue that’s difficult—and sometimes dangerous—to clean on your own.

What Causes a Puffback

Puffbacks typically happen in oil-fired heating systems but can occur in gas systems as well. They’re caused by a buildup of unburned fuel or vapors in the combustion chamber that ignite all at once, forcing soot and smoke back through the system.

Common causes include:

  • Dirty or clogged burners or nozzles

  • Blocked vents or chimneys

  • Delayed ignition or failed startup

  • Leaks in the fuel supply line

  • Lack of regular system maintenance

Even a small ignition delay can create enough pressure to push soot into living spaces through ducts, vents, or baseboard heaters.

Signs You May Have Experienced a Puffback

  • A loud “puff” or bang when the furnace starts

  • Soot or streaks around vents, ceilings, or nearby walls

  • A lingering smell of oil or smoke in the home

  • Fine black dust or oily residue appearing on furniture or clothing

If you notice any of these signs, shut off your heating system immediately and contact a professional.

Why You Shouldn’t Try to Clean It Yourself

The soot from a puffback is sticky and acidic, capable of staining walls, ceilings, and fabrics almost instantly. Attempting to wipe it with soap and water can smear the residue and make the damage worse. It can also impact indoor air quality and cause irritation when disturbed.

Professional cleaning involves specialized equipment, HEPA filtration, and proven techniques designed to safely remove residue from surfaces, contents, and air ducts.

How to Respond if a Puffback Happens

  1. Turn off your heating system and don’t restart it until it’s inspected.

  2. Avoid using fans or your HVAC system—they can spread soot.

  3. Document the damage with photos or video.

  4. Call a qualified restoration professional. Certified technicians can assess, contain, and clean the damage safely.

  5. Notify your insurance company to begin the claims process.

Preventing Puffbacks

Prevention starts with regular maintenance. Schedule annual inspections to clean burners, replace filters, check venting, and ensure safe ignition. Keeping your heating system serviced before each season greatly reduces the risk of a misfire or fuel buildup.

Thanksgiving Home & Cooking Safety Tips

Thanksgiving: where the turkey is big, the family is bigger, and the potential for kitchen chaos is… well, let’s just say, real. Let’s make sure your home and cooking are as safe as your dessert table is delicious.

Here are Insurcomm’s top tips for a safe and stress-free Thanksgiving:

    1. Don’t Let the Kitchen Burn You Out: Cooking for a crowd is a marathon, not a sprint. Never leave food unattended on the stove (unless you want your pumpkin pie to turn into a pumpkin fire). And if you’re deep frying that turkey, keep it outside—trust us, it’s worth it.
    2. Check Your Oven (and your Smoke Detector): Make sure your oven is clean and in good working order before it gets to work. Also, double-check your smoke detectors—nothing says “Happy Thanksgiving” like your alarm going off just as you’re about to carve the turkey.
    3. Home Sweet (and Safe) Home: With extra guests in the house, ensure your space is ready for a crowd. Clear away any tripping hazards (think rugs, toys, and that one chair you always forget about). And if you’re cooking with candles for ambiance, make sure they’re in safe spots—no one wants an unexpected fire.
    4. Fire Safety Is the Real Dish: Accidents happen, but preparation is key. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby (preferably not in the kitchen, but close enough for easy access). After all, your turkey should be the only thing crispy this holiday.
    5. Keep the Drinks (and Kitchen) in Check: Cooking and drinking don’t always mix. If you’re sipping wine, make sure you’re not too tipsy to handle that hot oven. Designate a sober sous-chef if needed!

This Thanksgiving let’s serve up some safety—because the only thing that should be sizzling is the stuffing, not the house!

Insurcomm Announces Growth Equity Investment from Summit Partners

Portsmouth, NH – Insurcomm, Inc., a rapidly growing provider of commercial and residential restoration services, today announced a majority growth investment from Summit Partners. Summit’s investment will support Insurcomm’s national expansion strategy as the Company continues its mission to deliver the highest quality service to commercial clients, residential customers, and municipalities navigating property loss events.

Insurcomm stands as one of the fastest-growing restoration services providers in the United States, propelled by a unique operating model and supported by a winning culture. The Company offers a comprehensive range of property damage restoration services, including fire and water damage cleanup, mold remediation, asbestos and biohazard removal, as well as reconstruction services to customers nationally. Together, we aim to set new standards in the restoration market, with a focus on partnering with like-minded operators who share our mission, and further cementing Insurcomm’s position as an industry leader.”

Summit’s investment comes at a time of strategic inflection for Insurcomm, as the Company seeks to scale its team, expand its operations, and acquire other providers who share a culture of excellence. Insurcomm has experienced accelerated growth over the past five years through the expansion of its geographic coverage and securing General Services Administration (GSA) Multiple Award Schedule (MAS) status for emergency response for all federal government agencies. Insurcomm has extensive experience across thousands of loss events, ranging from day-to-day emergency responses to major catastrophic events. The Insurcomm team has built deep and trusted relationships with property owners and insurers, fueling strong growth in market share.

“Against the backdrop of a highly fragmented restoration market with secular tailwinds, Insurcomm has developed an impressive delivery model that has helped the Company to grow rapidly and profitably,” said Matt Hamilton, a Managing Director at Summit Partners who has joined the Company’s Board of Directors. “We are thrilled to join forces with Doug and the entire Insurcomm team and to support the Company’s expansion plan.”

“We believe Insurcomm’s strong organic growth is a testament to the culture of excellence that the Company has created and their commitment to serving all stakeholders in property loss events,” added Andy Lee, Vice President at Summit Partners who has also joined the Company’s Board of Directors.
